Once, there was a little girl who didn’t quite fit in anywhere in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. She made sure to speak only English with the other children in town and pretended to understand their language full of rodeos and motorboats. At home, she spoke Spanish and the language of dancing and loud conversation with her Cuban refugee parents. But when no one was looking, her words were made up of art, movies, music, books, animation, and fashion magazines she’d find lying around the house.

Once, she tried to share her private language, and in second grade, she took her favorite book, Spain: A History in Art, to school and asked her teacher why they weren’t learning to paint like Goya. The teacher found her strange and ordered the little girl back to class to finish coloring the assigned rainbow unicorn.

As she grew older, she wished to live as a storyteller and an artist. But there was no such thing in her world; only lawyers, doctors, accountants, assistants, servers, and oil tycoons. 

She found her way into the theater and acted in Houston, Seattle, and Los Angeles, but she made people laugh whenever she cried. So she wandered on and sought a home in the land of comedy at Groundlings and UCB, where she wrote, produced, directed, and edited videos and comedy shorts and designed posters and websites to promote her work. 

Then, one day, someone read her comedy blogs and offered her a job as a copywriter. “What’s that?” she asked. She learned it’s where stories, voices, and art come together. It’s a place where creatives are swans, free to think from every angle and show up as they are. At last, she found her home and lived happily ever after.

Marisol is an honored playwright and screenwriter(2021 Princess Grace Awards in Playwriting/Fellowship at New Dramatists, Fulton Theatre’s Stories of Diversity Playwriting Festival 2021, 21st Century Voices at American Stage 2022, and the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s 2019 National Playwright Conference, LALIFF Desi Arnaz Screenwriting Award) who enjoys photo memoiring, studying neurodiversity, narrative and cognitive behavioral psychology, French language, health and fitness, and international cultures.
