The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA was in need of transforming hard-to-read research material into vital, relevant and accessible reading. Language was additionally reworked to create a marketing opportunity where originally there was none. Doing so spotlighted the importance of this research group and the data they collect. Below is a before and after snippet from the research group's annual The American Freshman Monograph.
The 2016 U.S. presidential election, the second Supreme Court case pertaining to affirmative action in college admissions, and increased intensity of confronting and preventing sexual assault on campus by colleges and universities represent just a few of the many critical issues facing higher education during the past year. Findings from the 2016 Freshman Survey as well as studies analyzing other datasets compiled and maintained by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) inform these debates.
HERI published two research briefs in the fall of 2015 that provide further evidence linking diverse college campuses with strong academic and co-curricular outcomes.
Polarized politics, mental health concerns and expanding views on identity are heated national topics that colleges and universities helped us measure this last year. With the findings from the 2016 Freshman Survey and other datasets compiled and maintained by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI), campuses now have important figures to enable creative solutions and support to make a real impact on their students, their institutions and the future of these debates. How great of an impact does our data have?
Last June, our research helped inform the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Univeristy of Texas’ affirmative action program.

Biotech Company Grifols Propels Rise of El Sereno as Leading Bioscience Hub
Grifols, a thriving bioscience/biotech company in L.A., is continuing its longstanding support of the community of El Sereno through the creation of the Bioscience Corridor. For years, Grifols has partnered with Cal State LA to support STEM programs for underprivileged students in El Sereno; now they are advocating for opportunities beyond the classroom by transforming El Sereno into a Bioscience Valley, a national hub for all bioscience technologies and innovations.
The newly proposed Corridor is being led by USC and CSULA, and is already underway: CSULA has broken ground for LA BioSpace, an incubator for startup biotech companies; USC is planning a bioscience/biotech facility and health campus; and private investors are working together to create HATCH, a second-step incubator to be built on Alhambra Road.
Grifols is proud to have supported city and county efforts to make the Bioscience Corridor a reality. As champions of El Sereno and its residents, the corridor is expected to provide new work opportunities to the area, and act as a strong reason to invest in surrounding small businesses and neighborhood developments.
